Did you know wine was discovered about 6,000 years ago in either Mesopotamia, Palestine/Israel or what is now called Georgia?

Indiana Wine Grape Council

IWGC

RESEARCH & MARKETING. The Indiana Wine Grape Council, established in 1989 by the Indiana General Assembly, seeks to enhance economic development in the state by establishing a successful wine grape industry through research and marketing development.

Since the creation of the Council in 1989, the number of Indiana wineries has increased from 9 to nearly 60. Additionally, Indiana agriculture has seen more than a 300 percent increase in wine-grape acreage since 1991.

The Council is funded through the excise tax added to wine purchases in the state of Indiana. Every gallon of wine sold in Indiana provides $0.05 for the Indiana Wine Grape Council to promote the wine and grape industry. The program provides extension specialists in enology (winemaking), viticulture (grape growing), and marketing to assist commercial and amateur grape growers and winemakers. The team of experts is located in the horticulture and food science departments at Purdue University.
