Two new wineries open in Indiana

Indiana 's wine industry continues to expand this fall with the opening of two new wineries in different parts of the state.

Mallow Run Winery opened in Bargersville in August. Owners John, Bill and Laura Richardson restored a century-old barn into a magnificent tasting room complete with a deck and seating for many people. Their first offerings include wines made from Indiana grown grapes plus fruit from surrounding states. The wines include Chardonel, Millot, Chancellor, Muscat and a variety of sweeter "picnic style" wines.

"While living in New Albany, John (my father) read an article in the Louisville Courier-Journal about Indiana wineries wanting farmers to grow grapes," said Bill Richardson. "Being originally from this Johnson County farm, he decided that would be a good excuse to move back home. After the second acre of grapes was planted, we decided that perhaps a winery could be in our future, and we had just the place for it...our barn. After many years of 'basement wine,' we can now sell the fruits of our labor to the public."

The winery and vineyard are located on Whiteland Road in Johnson County , two miles east of SR 37, or 10 miles west of I-65. Mallow Run Winery's tasting room was built in the 1870's, once storing hay and housed farm animals. The barn has been painstakingly refurbished into a beautiful tasting room.

Free wine tasting is available. Mallow Run Winery is open 12 p.m. to 6 p.m. Wednesday through Sunday.

Mallow Run is open Wed - Sun, Noon - 6 PM.

The northern part of the state, in Goshen , is home to another new winery. Wine Cellar Supply opened over the summer and specializes in wine making supplies. However, the store makes and sells wine under the Gateway Cellar label.

Winery hours can be obtained by calling 574-536-7256. The winery is located at 211 South Main Street in Goshen .

With the addition of these two new wineries, the Indiana wine industry has 31 commercial wineries and over 300 acres of grapes. Two more wineries are scheduled to open before the end of 2005. More are in the works for 2006.
