Indianapolis to host top international wine competition
WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - Winemakers from around the world will send their best wines to Indiana for the Indy International Wine Competition July 27-29th, 2006. Over 3,600 wines from 17 countries were judged at Indy last year, making it the third largest international wine competition in the United States. Eighty-five wine judges will travel to Indianapolis from throughout the United States, Europe and Canada to taste, analyze and score the various wines. Past judges include Daryl Groom, executive vice president/winemaker for Geyser Peak Winery and Dan Berger, syndicated wine columnist.
Competition categories include commercial and amateur entries. Amateur winemakers and commercial fruit winemakers will find the Indy International appealing since the Indy International provides special trophies and recognition for both of these categories. Trophies for the commercial wine class include best of show, best white, best red, and a Pacesetter Trophy, awarded to the winery winning the most quality points at the competition.
The competition, sponsored by the Indiana State Fair, will be held at the Indiana State Fairgrounds Blue Ribbon Pavilion in Indianapolis. Judging will take place from 9 a.m.-4 p.m. Thursday and Friday and from 10am-12pm on Saturday.
